The
Story of BrooklynBags.com & Aaron Sciandra....
 |
1977
Aaron
Sciandra is born in Fresno, California - Raisin Capital
of the World!
1982
His mother, Denise, teaches him to hand-sew and he loves
it immediately.
|
1983
After a fruitful year of hand-sewing, and a great deal of begging,
Denise teaches Aaron to use to use her sewing machine - a solid
steel 1967 Sears table machine that weighs a great deal more
than her child. He proceeds to make two teddy-bear themed, lace
trimmed aprons - one for each of his grandmothers.
1984
Aaron begins to study the Cello.
1992-1996
Attends Roosevelt School of the Arts. He studies music and printmaking
and starts making a few costume pieces for the theatre department.
By 1994, Aaron has taken over the costume shop and is designing
and constructing the majority of the costumes for both theatre
and ballet at the school. His parents buy him a Bernette student-grade
sewing machine so he can sew through his evenings, also.
1996-2000
Aaron moves to Brooklyn, NY to attend the Pratt Institute and
study sculpture.
2000-2003
Aaron joins the work force! He spends his time working
freelance on store windows for Macy's, Saks, Lord &
Taylor, and Barneys. His love of sewing, unfortunately,
falls by the wayside. |
 |
2003
After going an obscenely long time without any freelance work
Aaron finds himself unable to buy a birthday present for a very
close friend. He decides to make her a bag. The bag is a huge
hit, not only with her, but with everyone who sees it and it
is as if a light has been turned on. The angels start singing
and Brooklyn Bags is born!
2004
There are too many bags to make, and the Bernette isn't
cutting it anymore, so Aaron invests in an industrial
sewing machine. Shortly thereafter he manages to break
off an 18 gauge leather needle in the tip of his finger.
Surgery is required. |

2005
Two major additions to Aaron's life:
His partner, Garry, and Garry's wire-haired Jack Russel,
Frank (who is actually a girl!). Aaron doesn't care too
much for dogs, but Garry and Frank both have charms he
is unable to resist! |
2003-2007
